Above the Line

Refers to the creative talent and costs in a production budget — typically the writer, director, producer, and lead actors. These are negotiated individually, unlike below-the-line crew.
A $10M film might have $3M above the line (director, stars) and $7M below the line (crew, equipment, locations).
