Foreshadowing

A storytelling technique where hints or clues are planted early in the story that set up later plot points. When done well, audiences feel satisfied on rewatch.
In Act 1, the character mentions they cannot swim. In Act 3, they must cross a river to escape — the stakes are higher because of foreshadowing.
